Headshots / Business Portraits in NYC & Family Portraits in OBX

Lots of amazing portraits created recently, some on the beaches of Corolla and Duck in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and some on the streets of Manhattan in New York City.

As simple as these images look it takes a great deal of skill and planning in order to create them properly – you don’t just have a couple of kids run on the beach or have a guy stand on some street corner in the meat packing district. Among the things one needs to take into account the subjects size, clothing, the background, the direction and quality of the light – will any additional light help the image? – before all that you need to establish a rapport with the subject(s) to put them at ease so that they will look great.

Images like these don’t just happen, they take a lot of planning and experience from the photographer.

In the book Outliers, author Malcolm Gladwell says that it takes roughly ten thousand hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field, not many photographers these days have that much experience in their career, let alone in each of the many different disciplines of portrait photography.

But don’t worry, after nearly 37 years I have my 10,000 hours in on all types of portraits, because a business portrait in New York City is an entirely different challenge than a portrait of two children on the beach in Long Beach Island in New Jersey or in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

New Jersey Outer Banks Portrait Photographers & Real Portraits

So earlier today I was stopped by this portrait of my son when he was two years old………that was twenty years ago. It is a 5×7 that is displayed in our family room and I see it every day, but today I just stopped and stared at it for a while, then I wondered how many people have a real portrait of their child, and not just a whole bunch of pictures on their phone. And not a cheesy portrait taken by someone that they know who has a good camera, but a real, honest to goodness portrait that stands the test of time. One that is displayed properly to enjoy just about every day, and not just a bunch of digital files on your computer that you never look at, digital files that you are going to lose anyway when you accidentaly delete them or when your computer crashes, then what?

Do you have one? One created by a real portrait photographer, and if not why? It really doesn’t even cost that much, not much different than a dinner at a great restaurant, and you’ll have the portrait forever, and enjoy it every day. When you leave the restaurant it’s over.

And on another note, I’ve been getting in a lot of miles recently. Yesterday I passed the 500 mile mark for the year, and the running streak has hit 2,915 days!

More snow that I expected on the trails yesterday in Stephens State Park and today in the Deer Path section of Allamuchy State Park, both in New Jersey. Hope there is not any snow on my run on the beach in Corolla this Tuesday :-)

Why your digital photos might die before your grandkids see them

The other day I was going through some boxes in my basement and ran across this portrait of my mother from 1930. She was 12 years old and in 8th grade.

I have tons of these types of photographs, from both sides of my family, going back to the 1880s. I am very fortunate.

These days, it’s hard to imagine photos being stored in a box. The photos might be kept on a hard drive or posted on Facebook.

The problem? Besides being able to find the photos on your computer, hard drives can be unreliable and Internet companies sometimes fail — taking your memories with them.

The digital black hole: will it delete your memories?

Google’s vice-president Vint Cerf has warned that all digitally stored photos could be wiped out by tech upgrades, putting the sum total of human knowledge under threat. It’s a good read – An author and scientist explains why today’s systems are so vulnerable – and how pioneers are preparing for the worst.

This is one of the many reasons that I provide my clients with beautiful custom printed portraits to display on their walls, and to be easily enjoyed for generations. Many photographers in the Outer Banks, and for that matter, everywhere, today only sell digital files to their customers. How irresponsible and what a huge disservice this is. Most of these photographers have no idea on proper post production techniques ( aka retouching ) or how to make archival prints that will last hundreds of years.

Most people also know absolutely nothing about the proper way to store digital images and back them up, just click the above link to see what the vice-president of Google has to say about this, and if he is worried, maybe we should be too.

I understand why clients want digital files of their family portraits, I do too. I love to carry images of my kids and grandkids on my phone and to share them on Facebook with my friends, and that is why I offer my clients the option to purchase digital files in addition to prints, custom hand finished prints that will last hundred of years. Ones that your grandkids or great grandkids will one day find so very valuable……….and cherish.
