Hey Guys, just thought that I’d show ya’all a short slide show of a great portrait session of an awesome family from New Jersey that I photographed way down south in Hatteras, N.C. last evening.
These images are right out of the camera without any retouching – they are going to be absolutely amazing when all of the post production is finished. Just like you need to start with a great piece of meat in order to cook a great steak, you can’t make a beautiful portrait if you don’t start with a great digital file, no matter how much photoshop that you know.

Headshots / Business Portraits in NYC & Family Portraits in OBX
Lots of amazing portraits created recently, some on the beaches of Corolla and Duck in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and some on the streets of Manhattan in New York City.
As simple as these images look it takes a great deal of skill and planning in order to create them properly – you don’t just have a couple of kids run on the beach or have a guy stand on some street corner in the meat packing district. Among the things one needs to take into account the subjects size, clothing, the background, the direction and quality of the light – will any additional light help the image? – before all that you need to establish a rapport with the subject(s) to put them at ease so that they will look great.
Images like these don’t just happen, they take a lot of planning and experience from the photographer.
In the book Outliers, author Malcolm Gladwell says that it takes roughly ten thousand hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field, not many photographers these days have that much experience in their career, let alone in each of the many different disciplines of portrait photography.
But don’t worry, after nearly 37 years I have my 10,000 hours in on all types of portraits, because a business portrait in New York City is an entirely different challenge than a portrait of two children on the beach in Long Beach Island in New Jersey or in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
