Kids, Chaos, and the Magic of Real Family Moments
Anyone who has ever tried to photograph children knows one simple truth.
Kids rarely follow the plan.

They run. They spin. They study the sand like it’s a newly discovered planet. Sometimes they wander off in the middle of a perfectly arranged group photo.
And honestly, that’s exactly how it should be.
Family portrait sessions on the Outer Banks aren’t about controlling every moment. They’re about allowing real personalities to show up naturally.
Parents often arrive at their session just a little nervous.
“What if the kids don’t cooperate?”
But the truth is, children don’t need to cooperate perfectly for beautiful portraits to happen.
They just need space to be themselves.

Some of the most memorable portraits I’ve created in Corolla, Duck, and across the northern Outer Banks happened when the moment wasn’t planned at all.
A child laughs unexpectedly.
A sibling reacts.
A parent leans in naturally.
Suddenly the entire group relaxes.
And that’s when the portrait starts to feel real.
One thing that often surprises families is how much experience goes into creating that relaxed environment. Before focusing primarily on family beach portraits, I spent many years photographing children professionally. At one point I worked as a high-volume children’s photographer — the kind of job where hundreds of kids might come through the camera in a single week.
In fact, during those years I probably photographed more children in one week than many photographers photograph in years… sometimes even in an entire career.
That kind of experience changes the way you work.
You learn very quickly that children aren’t problems to solve — they’re personalities to understand. Some kids are shy. Some are curious. Some are full of energy. Each one responds differently, and the key is knowing how to guide the moment without forcing it.
That background makes a huge difference during family portrait sessions on the beach.
When kids feel comfortable, everything else falls into place.
The beach actually helps this process too. The open space, the breeze, and the rhythm of the ocean naturally put families at ease. There’s room to move, room to laugh, and room for real interactions to happen.
And that relaxed energy shows up in the final images.
Not stiff smiles.
Not forced poses.

Just genuine moments between parents, children, grandparents, and siblings — the little interactions that define a family at this exact time in life.
Years from now, those are the photographs families return to the most.
Because when they look at them, they don’t just see how everyone looked.
They remember exactly how it felt. ✌️❤️🙂
