Large family groups • Extended families • Carova/4x4 served • Corolla studio • 40+ years Experience • Certified Master Photographer
Photographing a large family on the beach is very different from photographing a small group.
When you’re bringing together multiple generations—grandparents, adult children, grandchildren, and sometimes family dogs—you only get one real opportunity to do it right.
For more than 40 years, I’ve specialized in creating classic, well-composed beach portraits for large and extended families visiting Corolla and the Outer Banks. These sessions are carefully planned, clearly directed, and designed to feel relaxed—so the final portrait reflects your family at its best.
This is not a quick lineup or a casual snapshot session.
It’s a thoughtfully crafted portrait experience focused on creating one meaningful image your family will treasure for generations.
Large family portraits don’t allow much room for trial and error.
The light changes quickly. Children lose interest. Older family members tire easily. And once everyone is assembled, you have a very short window to get it right.
Experience matters because it allows me to:
-Organize large groups quickly and confidently
-Pose people naturally so no one looks stiff or awkward
-Work efficiently so sessions don’t drag on
-Anticipate challenges before they become problems
After four decades behind the camera, I know how to read people, manage energy, and create structure without making the session feel rigid. The result is a portrait that feels calm, connected, and timeless—even when there are 15 or 20 people involved.
Every large family session follows a proven flow:
The full family portrait comes first
This is the most important image—the one destined for the wall. We capture it while everyone is fresh and focused.
Smaller family groupings follow
Individual households, grandparents with grandchildren, siblings together—planned in advance so nothing is missed.
Natural variations are layered in
Once the structure is set, we add relaxed moments that still feel polished and intentional.
Clear direction keeps everything moving smoothly. No guessing, no wandering, no chaos.
Experience vs. Guesswork
Many beach photographers are comfortable with small families. Large groups require a different skill set. I’ve been photographing extended families long before digital cameras existed—and that experience shows in the final result.
Planning vs. Hoping
I don’t show up and “see what happens.” Groupings, timing, and positioning are thought through in advance so nothing is left to chance.
Finished Artwork vs. Just Files
Most large families want more than images living on a phone. My focus is on heirloom-quality finished artwork—portraits designed to be enjoyed every day in your home.
Calm Direction vs. Chaos
Big families need leadership, not volume. Clear, confident direction keeps the session relaxed and respectful for every generation involved.
Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes
The best light is usually the last 60–90 minutes before sunset
I help guide wardrobe coordination for cohesive, timeless results
Weather is monitored closely, with flexibility built into your vacation week whenever possible
Sessions are scheduled in limited numbers to allow proper time and attention
Most large families choose:
One statement piece featuring the entire group
Additional pieces or albums for individual households
I guide you through size, framing, and placement so your portrait fits your home—not just today, but years from now. These are not disposable images; they’re part of your family’s visual history.
I photograph large family beach portraits primarily in Corolla, Carova, and Duck, North Carolina, choosing locations and timing based on light, access, and group needs.
I also work with families in the New York City and New Jersey metro area during parts of the year.
Large family sessions are scheduled carefully and are limited each week to ensure every group receives the attention it deserves.
If your family includes eight or more people and you want a timeless beach portrait done right, I’d be happy to talk with you.

What do you consider a “large family” portrait?
A large family portrait usually includes 8 or more people, often spanning multiple generations—grandparents, adult siblings, spouses, children, and sometimes family dogs. These sessions require planning, clear direction, and experience, which is exactly what I bring to the beach.
How do you organize and pose large family groups?
Before we ever step onto the sand, I think through the groupings. During the session, I pose and photograph the full group first, then move quickly into smaller family combinations. Everyone knows where to stand, when to step in, and when they’re finished—no confusion, no chaos.
Will we get a classic “everyone together” portrait?
Absolutely. The goal of a large family session is a timeless, well-composed portrait of the entire family together, something worthy of hanging in a home. Once we have that, we layer in relaxed variations and smaller groupings.
How long should a large family beach session take?
Most large family sessions take 60–90 minutes, depending on group size and how many combinations you’d like. The key is efficiency—clear direction keeps the session moving while still feeling relaxed.
What’s the best time of day for large family beach portraits?
For large groups, the last 60–90 minutes before sunset offers the most flattering light and consistent conditions. I’ll recommend a start time that allows enough breathing room so no one feels rushed.
What should everyone wear for a large family session?
Large groups photograph best in a coordinated color palette, not identical outfits. Neutral tones with soft blues, grays, or sand colors work beautifully. I’m happy to help one family member coordinate choices so the final portrait looks cohesive and timeless.
What if some family members are late or wander off?
It happens. I structure the session so that critical portraits are captured first, and smaller groupings can happen as people cycle in and out. Experience with large families means knowing how to adapt without stress.
Can you handle very large groups (15, 20, or more people)?
Yes. I regularly photograph very large extended families. The key is planning, positioning, and experience. I work quickly, communicate clearly, and keep things moving so even big groups feel manageable.
Do you work with children, toddlers, and older family members?
All the time. I keep sessions moving so children don’t lose interest and make sure older family members are comfortable and positioned thoughtfully. The goal is for everyone to enjoy the experience, not endure it.
What if the weather changes during our week?
Beach weather is unpredictable. If conditions aren’t safe or flattering, we’ll adjust or reschedule within your vacation week whenever possible. I stay in close communication so decisions are clear and stress-free.
What do most large families do with their finished portraits?
Most families choose one statement piece—a large framed print or canvas of the full group—along with smaller pieces or albums for individual households. I help guide those choices so the final artwork fits your home and lasts for generations.
How far in advance should large families book?
Large family sessions are limited and book early, especially in peak season. The sooner you reach out, the better your options for ideal days and times.
What’s the biggest difference between you and a typical beach photographer?
Experience. Large families don’t get second chances. With over 40 years of professional portrait experience, I know how to manage people, light, timing, and expectations—so you walk away with a portrait your family will treasure, not a gamble.

Lots of images of large, medium and small family groups on and off the beach in New Jersey and Corolla and Duck and the entire Outer Banks of North Carolina. There are also many images of sunrises, sunsets and surfing photos in the Outer Banks, along with a mix of dog and pet photography, business portraits and headshots from sessions in New York City and all over New Jersey. Lots of fun photos from my journey.
Duncan spotted a crab on the beach this morning and figured he’d do a little investigating.
Turns out the crab had a few opinions of its own. 🦀🐶
What started as ole Dunc chasing the crab quickly turned into the crab having none of that 🤣
Just another day in Corolla… where even the locals don’t always agree on who’s in charge. ☮️🙂🏖️
Some Saturday mornings feel like they’re trying to tell us something.
Slow down.
Look around.
You’re already standing in the good old days.
✌️❤️😀
Duncan and I slipped down to the beach before most of Corolla was awake this morning.
Just a little salt air, a quiet sunrise, and a dog with absolutely no interest in watching the sunrise because there were far more important things to sniff. ☀️🐾
Seems like ole Dunc has life pretty well figured out.
Slow down. Chase a few smells. Enjoy the view. Be where your feet are.
Happy Friday from Corolla
☮️❤️🐾
Getting all of your family members together in one place isn’t easy.
Different schedules.
Different states.
Different stages of life.
And when this group may never all be together again, it’s probably not the time to hire someone who’s still learning on the job.
Large family portraits require experience, planning, patience, and the ability to keep a lot of moving parts moving in the same direction.
I wrote a short article about why large family portraits require a different kind of photographer.

Happy Monday. ☀️
I’ve never really understood why so many people dread Mondays.
To me, Mondays have always felt more like a fresh start than the beginning of a workweek. A new page. A new sunrise. A chance to begin again.
This morning ole Dunc and I headed over the dune to watch the sun come up over the Atlantic, and it felt like a pretty good reminder that every week arrives with possibility built right in.
Here’s to new beginnings, fresh tracks in the sand, and whatever good things this week might bring.
Peace, Love, Smile. ☮️❤️🙂🐾
Every summer I photograph families who tell me,
“We’ve been meaning to do this for years.”
Funny how life works.
The days seem long.
The years seem short.
I’m always glad when people finally decide to make the time.
☮️❤️🙂

A reminder from yesterday...
A woman called me in a panic because her photographer had just canceled her family portrait session. The reason?
“It’s too windy and I don’t want to damage my camera.”
Seriously.
Fortunately, I was available and able to photograph her group of 16 people—many of whom hadn’t all been together in several years. We created some beautiful images they’ll treasure for a lifetime.
Unfortunately, that kind of thing happens more often than you might think here on the Outer Banks. Beach photography can be challenging. Wind happens. Sand happens. Weather changes. It’s simply part of the job.
Here’s the thing...
Just because someone has a camera, a website, and a few years of experience doesn’t guarantee professionalism, dependability, or the ability to handle real-world conditions.
After more than 40 years as a professional photographer, I’ve learned that great portraits aren’t made when everything is perfect. They’re made when you know how to adapt when things aren’t.
When your family may never all be together again, experience matters.
Sometimes later becomes never.

Just finished putting together what I think is a pretty helpful article for anyone thinking about family photos while they’re in Corolla or the Outer Banks.
A few thoughts from 40+ years behind the camera about choosing a photographer, why experience matters, and why photographing a family of 20 isn’t quite the same as photographing a family of 4. 🙂
The article link is in the first comment if you’d like to take a look.
As I often say...do it now..........because sometimes later becomes never.

Saw this guy/gal cruising the dunes the other evening……..the wild horses here remind us that not everything in life is supposed to be rushed.
No schedule.
No noise.
Just sand, salt air, and another Corolla sunset quietly doing its thing. ☀️🐎
Sometimes the best moments out here are the ones that don’t say a word. ✌️❤️😎 #corolladise
“Life is not a race to accumulate furniture.” — Jimmy Buffett ☀️
Funny how the good stuff usually isn’t the stuff at all.
It’s quiet mornings…salt air…a shell in the sand…and those few minutes when the sun reminds you to slow down and just be where your feet are.
Keep collecting moments. The rest tends to sort itself out. ☮️❤️🙂 #liveyourdash #obxsunrise
Real talk...
Anybody can buy a professional grade camera, but the camera doesn’t create the photo.
Years from now you won’t remember what camera somebody used.
You’ll remember who was standing beside you.
Kids.
Families.
Moments.
Everybody together under one roof again.
Do it right.
Hire a professional to make that family portrait you’ve always wanted.
Because one day these moments become priceless.
Do it now...
Because sometimes next time...
Becomes never.
I’d love to help create something your family will treasure long after the beach week ends.

Freedom, family, ocean air, and little footprints in the sand. 🇺🇸
Grateful today for those who made moments like this possible.
Hold hands. Slow down. Savor the moment. ❤️☮️🙂
Real talk...
One day these beach weeks become stories.
The people.
The laughs.
The sandy kids.
The sound of the ocean.
Right now you’re living the stuff you’ll someday look back on.
Take a picture.
Better yet...
Get in one too.

There’s something kind of cool happening during beach weeks...
Phones get put down a little more.
People stay on the beach a little longer.
Families sit together a little closer.
Take it in.
And while everyone’s here...
Do it right. Hire a professional and make that portrait you’ve always wanted.
Because one day this week becomes the story everyone talks about.
Do it now...
Because sometimes next time...
Becomes never.

Funny thing about beach weeks...
While you’re in them, they feel normal.
Everybody under one roof again.
Kids running around.
Ocean air and sandy feet.
Don’t just snap a few phone photos.
Do it right. Hire a professional to make that portrait.
Because one day these moments become priceless.
Do it now...Because sometimes next time...Becomes never.✌️❤️🙂
Somewhere along the line people started thinking exercise was about punishment.
I’ve never really seen it that way.
For me it’s always been about feeling good.
Clear head.
Strong legs.
Good energy.
Better mornings.
I still run at least a mile every day, move my body, eat pretty clean, do some yoga … and yeah… I still enjoy a couple of beers now and then too. 🍺🙂
I’m not chasing perfection.
I’m just trying to feel alive and stay engaged with life.
And honestly…
I think optimism might be just as important as vegetables.
Keep moving.
Keep laughing.
Keep going. ☮️❤️😀

Some mornings in Corolla just feel like a reminder…
you don’t have to have it all figured out.
Progress isn’t about where you start, but about showing up and moving forward.
One step through the sand. One sunrise at a time. ☮️❤️😎 #obxsunrise
“Quietness is an essential part of all awareness.” — Margaret Wise Brown
There’s a moment out here… right before the day really gets going… when the only thing you hear is the ocean doing its thing and the sand under your feet. No noise. No rush. Just space to notice it all.
That’s where this place hits different.
Not in the big, loud, obvious way… but in the quiet.
Footsteps in the sand.
Sun climbing slow over the Atlantic.
A path that’s been walked a thousand times… and still feels brand new.
You don’t come to Corolla just to see it.
You come to feel it.
And sometimes… the best part of that feeling
is the quiet. ☮️❤️😀 #corolladise #corollasunrise #obxsunrise

Low tide, soft light, and that quiet stretch where the fence just disappears into the Atlantic…
No crowds, no noise… just the sound of a small wave rolling in and the sky doing its thing.
Corolla mornings don’t ask for much—just that you show up. ✌️❤️😀 #obxsunrise #liveyourdash
