The good news is that Corolla offers some of the most beautiful portrait locations anywhere on the Outer Banks.
Wide beaches.
Rolling dunes.
Golden sunsets.
Quiet stretches of shoreline.
Historic village settings.
And if you’re adventurous, even the remote beaches of Carova.
After more than 40 years as a professional photographer, I’ve learned that the best location isn’t always the most famous location.
It’s the location that works best for your family.
The size of your group.
The ages of your children.
The mobility of grandparents.
The time of year.
The weather.
The wind.
The light.
All of those things matter.
That’s why choosing the right location is one of the most important parts of creating beautiful Corolla beach family photos.

The Beach Near Your Vacation Home May Be the Best Location
Many families assume they need to drive somewhere special for family photos.
Often they don’t.
In many cases, the beach access closest to your vacation home turns out to be the perfect location.
Why?
Because it’s familiar.
It’s convenient.
And most importantly, it keeps everyone relaxed.
When you’re photographing grandparents, young children, cousins, and multiple generations, keeping things simple is often the smartest choice.
Nobody wants to spend an hour loading cars, finding parking, and walking long distances through the sand before the portrait session even begins.

Corolla offers something that many beach destinations don’t.
Space.
The beaches are wide.

And there are often opportunities to create portraits that feel natural and uncluttered.
As a Corolla family photographer, one of the things I love most is how many different looks we can create in a relatively small area.
Within a few hundred yards we can often photograph:

• Sunset silhouettes
That variety helps create a gallery that feels complete.
Dunes Create Beautiful Backgrounds
When most people think about beach portraits, they immediately think about the ocean.
The ocean is beautiful.
But sometimes the dunes make an even better backdrop.
Dunes add texture.
Depth.
Warm colors.
And they help create portraits that feel uniquely Outer Banks.
They can also provide protection from wind, which can be especially helpful during spring and early summer sessions.
One of the things experience teaches you is that the best background isn’t always the most obvious one.
Sometimes turning away from the water creates the strongest image.

Historic Corolla Village
Not every portrait session has to happen on the beach.
Historic Corolla Village offers a completely different look.
Old trees.
Historic buildings.
Beautiful textures.
Quiet pathways.
A sense of place.
Since my studio is located in Historic Corolla Village, I spend a lot of time there and have come to appreciate its charm.
For smaller families, couples, children, and even pets, the village can be a wonderful option.
Some families even choose a combination session with portraits in the village followed by beach photographs at sunset.
The variety can be incredible.
The Currituck Lighthouse Area
The area around the Currituck Beach Lighthouse can also provide beautiful portrait opportunities.
While I don’t typically use the lighthouse itself as the main focus of a family portrait, the surrounding area can add character and a strong sense of Corolla.
Many visitors love incorporating local landmarks into their vacation memories.
The key is making sure the portrait remains about the people rather than the location.
A great family portrait should still be meaningful twenty years from now.
Carova’s 4×4 Beaches
If you’re staying north of Corolla in Carova, Swan Beach, North Swan Beach, Penny’s Hill, or Seagull, you have access to one of the most unique portrait locations on the East Coast.
Remote beaches.
Wild horses.
Very few crowds.
Open natural landscapes.
Carova sessions require experience and planning, but they can be extraordinary.

Many families staying in Duck wonder whether they should photograph their family in Duck or drive north to Corolla.
The answer depends on what kind of portrait experience you’re looking for.
Duck has beautiful beaches, charming village areas, and wonderful soundside locations.
Corolla tends to feel a little more open and natural.
Both are beautiful.
The best choice is often the location closest to where you’re staying.

The Best Time for Corolla Beach Family Photos
Without question, the most popular time for family portraits in Corolla is the hour before sunset.
The light becomes softer.
The temperatures become more comfortable.
The beach becomes quieter.
And the colors become warmer.
Midday portraits can certainly work, but sunset remains my favorite time to photograph families.
The light is simply more flattering.
It’s one of the reasons so many of the portraits featured on my website were created in that final hour of the day.
