Portrait Session at the Kitty Hawk Pier
The other day I had the pleasure of working by the Kitty Hawk Pier again. This time with a great family from West Virginia.
The session was in the morning and we were dodging rain drops in the beginning so we started
the session working under the pier, and then as the rain stopped we moved on the open beach.
Some pretty cool skies and light!
On another note I had a woman call yesterday and schedule a portrait session for August.
She shared that she had her families “portrait” done last year by another photographer and that she wasn’t at all pleased. The portraits were not really portraits, but just glorified snaps ( her words ), with everyone just standing and kneeling straight on in front of the ocean, and then the same thing in front of a dune, with no design or compositional elements. The photographer delivered a disk of “enhanced” digital files, with instructions for the client to have them printed at her own lab or an online “pro” one. The photographer selected the best of each pose and included them on the disk. My client had a few prints made, but never even displayed them. Her teenage children had blemishes that were not retouched, there were harsh shadows on the faces ( because the “pro photographer” did not really know how to balance and work with light ), and my client just put the disk and the few bad prints in the drawer and never displayed them or gave any to family members.
What a waste :-( ……….of time and money.
Unfortunately I hear this same story over and over……….most “fauxtographers” that deliver a disk of “enhanced” digital files have no real knowledge of retouching and print enhancement techniques or skills, let alone lighting skills or the skills required for proper image capture, or much experience working with groups of people. Just because they have been in business for a few years does not mean they know what they are doing…………and when I hear someone say they are a “natural light” photographer or a “lifestyle” photographer I laugh because I know that means that they do not know how to use a flash properly or how to direct people into comfortable poses so that they look their best.
I’ve been doing this since 1978, and have my 10,ooo hours working with children, and another 10,000 hours with family groups, and another 10,ooo hours with……well you get it……….
Compare my work with others, and I think that you will see difference between me and most others.
